Home Furnishings: Top Tips

When buying for home furniture, there are a lot of tips that you need to be aware of in order to get the best out of the quality and from the price. There are numerous stores that sell furniture for the home and you may get confused on which place is the best for you. It is never recommended to buy the first furniture that you like. Always look for more items and selections first so that you can make sure that what you are buying is the best in the market.

The bedroom is one place in your home that you may want to redecorate. When choosing home bedroom furniture the best tip to follow is finding the best and the most comfortable. The bedroom is your private sanctuary and it is very important that your bedroom furniture is comfortable. For instance, when you are buying a bed for your room, choose the one that you find at ease with. Do not be afraid to test out the bed, its foam and how it feels once you lay on it. Also do not forget to measure the size of the bed that it can fit perfectly in your room. For the home bathroom furniture, choose the ones that can fit into the space of your bathroom. Keep it elegant and simple.

For the furniture in your home, the trick is finding the perfect design and color that can match your place. One home furniture store can carry countless furniture that have different color, designs and materials to suit your home. Some of them may have offers of making made to order furniture if you cannot find the design and the color that you want. These made to order furniture may cost more than the regular ones in the store, but if you have the budget and you are willing to wait, this could ensure that you will get the furniture that you want. When shopping for home furniture, it is important that you are getting items that are of good quality. You may want your furniture to last for years. Paying for cheap but low quality furniture will only cost you more in the long run because you will need to repair or buy new furniture from time to time.

When choosing the sofas or armchair of your living room, the rule is like that of the bedroom, choose the sofa or armchair that can give you comfort. Your guests or family will be sitting in these sofas when you get together or watch television, a comfortable sofa means a lot. Also make sure that the sofa can match your room color. It does not have to be the same color, but something that can compliment your home. There is also other home décor furniture that you may want to add like coffee tables, side tables or a small chair or tea table. These are good furniture to add to your room if you have enough space. Overcrowding a room with furniture is never a good idea. It will only make your home look smaller and disorganized.

Sliding wardrobe doors are the wardrobe lovers dream. I know what your thought process is; is there such a thing as a wardrobe lover? If the majority of wardrobes owned by a person are inferior, pokey and loosely held together pieces of wood, chances are not. However, if sliding wardrobe doors are the choice of wardrobe for a person, with their spaciousness, their high quality and their attractiveness, then the answer is yes; If you owned sliding wardrobe doors, you too would be a wardrobe lover.
Many sliding wardrobe doors are spacious wardrobes, allowed such room by the sliding nature of the doors, which tends to move very smoothly owing to their top hung system. The sliding wardrobe doors allow owners much room to store a variety of shoes, of clothes and of other assorted ephemera, such as old Christmas cards and photographs of partners long forgotten.
The typical systems used in conjunction with sliding wardrobe doors are the top hung system and the bottom rolling system, both allowing for spacious wardrobes and both allowing the doors to be slid along their hinges. The bottom rolling system is harder to manoeuvre than the top hung system, due to the weight of the doors being placed upon the rolling track, but is still far smoother and convenient than the doors of an atypical wardrobe.
The pricing for sliding wardrobe doors is often very reasonable, pricing equating to the iteration of sliding wardrobe doors that is requested, altering owing to time and monetary constraints and the materials that may wish to be used. Sliding wardrobe doors providers will often offer this price once the details of the wardrobe requested are provided and will then provide the details as to when they will be assembling the wardrobe and whether the materials requested are, indeed, available.

Halloween at Home

As Halloween comes and goes you may wonder how that sticky toffee apple got behind the chair or how the house became a rubbish tip overnight. Simple, the little bundles of joy we call children consumed their weight in sugar and went on a riot.

Loft Bunk Beds

Best Loft Bunk Beds

If you are in the market for loft beds or bunk beds, a major choice is wood versus metal. Depending on the overall look and size you desire, you will want to choose a differently constructed bed. Although both materials are both sturdy and safe, many individuals choose either metal or wood when searching for the optimum bed to fit the room.

Most older bunk beds are made of wood, and are generally easier to make safety modifications and enhancements. Also, the price of wooden bunk beds may be more economical, especially if you are shopping at second hand stores or using a bed previously used by a friend or family member. Furthermore, wooden bunk beds can be easily repaired, painted, stripped, or stained to create a completely different look for differing tastes.

Metal bunk beds are usually made of tubular metal and thought to be a classic kid's type of bedding. How many times have you seen a red or white metal bunk bed in a child's bedroom? Metal bunk beds made in recent years are built to the set safety requirements, but if any safety requirements are not up to par, emendations are much more difficult to make.

When looking at loft beds, the newer, stylish beds are made of metal. Additionally, metal loft beds take up less space so that tight spaces will not be further infringed by bulky metal creations. Also, metal beds allow a greater amount of decoration than wooden beds, so these are quite popular with the feminine crowd. Additionally, a change in style requires nothing more than a can of spray paint in the new and improved color.

Wooden loft beds are most associated with college dormitories, where loft beds built of raw two by fours are king. These beds can be found around every corner of campus come move-in day, so keep your pennies for things like books and purchase a used loft bed. You may even gain a couple new phone numbers, since most college co-eds use their loft beds as a huge message pad. The plus side of a wooden loft bed is that you will save a great deal of money on paper!

Whatever type of bunk bed or loft bed you choose to purchase, ensure the bed is safe. It does not matter if you are two, twelve, or twenty, safety is still important when entrusting your bodily safety while you sleep. A teenager can roll out of bed just as easily as a toddler, so be sure all beds have the proper guard rails and safety precautions. Generally, the choice between wood and metal bunk beds or loft beds is completely personal and depends on the space and the style.

Improve your Bedroom Ambience!

Setting the mood in the bedroom is important. When your bedroom is designed to meet the mood of the room you are much happier, relax more and generally have a better experience in your bedroom. Personally, the sleep I get in my bedroom is much better when it's tidy!

There are a number of things you can do to improve the ambience within your bedroom.

Tip 1: Clear the clutter.  Newpapers, magazine, that old chair in the corner which harvests clothes... they can all go. Now. A clean bedroom is a happy bedroom.

Tip 2: No eating in bed (unless you're unwell). I know eating in bed is common and comfortable, however how long do the mugs, plates and unwanted papers remain afterwards? Keep food out of the bedroom.

Tip 3: Lighting. Set the ambient theme with the correct lighting. Bedside lamps are best I find.

Tip 4: Smells. Often the reason for a poor sleep is because there is a smell in the room. Use a light airfreshner in your bedroom but try and keep it as neutral as possible.

Tip 5: Bedroom furniture. Your bedroom furniture says a lot about your style and taste. The bedroom furniture can also set the ambience for the whole room. The correct sliding mirror wardrobe furniture can improve your bedroom and really set the mood.

Give us your bedroom ambience tips - we'd love to hear them!

Home Owners Spend an £1000 on their House P/Y

New research into homeowners and the amount of money they spend on their house has been revealed by Sliding Mirror Wardrobes today.

A survey of 150 homeowners found that the average home owner spent £1000 on their house each year. This includes repairs, home improvements and

The items people were most likely to spend on their house was an upgraded kitchen, new double glazing or improving their bedroom.

32% of those surveyed said they didn't spend enough on their property last year and that they still have home improvements to make. Asked "will you spend more money next year?", the majority said they would like to but probably not. The main reason for failing to improve their house was because of the recession and a general lack of finances.

A spokesperson for Sliding Mirror Wardrobes said "The states of the economy means some people don't have the finances for fitted bedroom furniture, many people can't even keep up with general repairs on their property."

Integrated Bedroom Furniture

Sliding Mirror Wardrobe furniture is becoming more and more popular to help store the clutter. Closet furniture which integrates into your bedroom can transform empty, seemingly difficult spaces into a work of art. The sliding mirror wardrobe will include specifically built shelves for your items. The creative genius behind building your own bedroom furniture is that you get to decide what shelves and railings go in.

Your sliding mirror wardrobe can be built to your own specifications, including the interiors. This means you can customise part of your wardrobe to suit your clothes, accessories or shoes. One woman owned over 50 handbags and wanted them stored away neatly. The perfect solution was to build a sliding mirror wardrobe.

Organising your bedroom

Bedroom furniture is functionally there to store your items, but as you know, one size doesn't fit all. All houses are built differently and wardrobes from a catalogue are not built to suit your own lifestyle. A Sliding Mirror Wardrobe completely customised to meet your taste will be.

You not only get to decide where your wardrobe will go but the materials to use, the quality of product, the railings, the colours, where will your ties, shoes, clothes, handbags, jewellery all go? How large should your wardrobe furniture be? How will it look inside? Do you want a mirror on the outside?

Things to think about with a Sliding Mirror Wardrobe?

Before you hurry off and buy a Sliding Mirror Wardrobe, ask yourself - "What do I need?"

- What will I store in my wardrobe?
- How large should my wardrobe furniture be?
- How tall will it be? (Plus, if it reaches the ceiling how will I access the top?)
- How will it be split between my partner and I?
- How much am I willing to spend?
- What will the outside look like?
- Should my mirror wardrobe have colour outside and in?
- What wood should I use for my sliding mirror wardrobe?
- When do I want my sliding mirror wardrobe?
- Do you need basket underneath your wardrobe?

Sliding Mirror Wardrobe

There are various different Sliding Mirror Wardrobes brought about by different companies in the UK. The best thing about the Sliding Mirror Wardrobe furniture blog is that we get to discuss the various different styles and as it's subjective you can play your part too.

What one person likes may not be the same as another person. This is understandable as we are all different people with our own thoughts. We've seen couples argue and disagree passionately about bedroom furniture including their Sliding Mirror Wardrobe furniture so why is it the case?

Well, each day we spend over 7 hours in our bedroom. It's a place of relaxation, comfort, passion and a place we feel safe. So, when it comes to couples and their bedroom furniture, it's always best to compromise!

Our style for Sliding Mirror Wardrobes

We've got a couple of designs for Sliding Mirror Wardrobes which we would like to share with you. These are our personal favourites of the moment.

This is one of our favourite sliding wardrobes. It includes a dark, warm wood which adds a cosy feel to a bedroom. The class ensures this sublime wardrobe sparkles.

This easy to open wardrobe looks exceptional in any bedroom and offers additional storage space. The quality of the wood means the 10 year guarantee wouldn't even be under question.

My favourite wardrobe at present is the sliding beach with a light green banner across the middle and bottom. The wardrobe looks stunning in any bedroom.

The glass colouring can be changed to be meet any taste and will add a sophisticated look to any bedroom.

With every Sliding Mirror Wardrobe I like, there is another I hate. The image below represents the old style of bland, sliding mirror wardrobes which really should have been left in the 90's. The basic Sliding Mirror Wardrobe appeals to people who like to stay safe when updating their bedroom.

One benefit of the all glass Sliding Mirror Wardrobe is it makes a bedroom look larger than it is. There are current styles of fitted bedrooms and Sliding Mirror Wardrobes which can make this happen too! Don't be afraid to shop around for your bedroom furniture and get different ideas.

Housing market numbers set to fall

The number of people in England who own their property is expected to drop to levels not witnessed since the mid-1980's according to a recent survey.

The National Housing Federation's forecast states that just 63.8% of people will own their own home in the next decade. The cost of deposits, lack of recent house building and an unsettled market place are to balme for the decline.

The UK Government housing minister has stated that the Government is planning a massive housing reform by building new homes. We recently wrote about the shared equity schemes currently on offer which could help people get on the housing market.

The market has witnessed change across the board with some of the largest housing builders and bedroom manufacturers going into administration.

People who own their property are move likely to spend money on their bedroom, bathroom or kitchen than those who rent. This means that trading for Sliding Mirror Wardrobes could become more volitile and difficult.

Home improvement can still take place - you can improve your house with a fitted bedroom or sliding mirror wardrobe and in turn improve the quality, and value, of your house. We will likely see the fitted bedroom providers lowering their prices to encourage home owners to spend money on their house.

Today's Sliding Mirror Wardrobe company is Sliding Wardrobe World.

e

The website for Sliding Wardrobe World is colourful, informative and clean looking (free from clutter - a benefit of owning a Sliding Wardrobe). The website can be found at www.slidingwardrobeworld.com

From what we can see there are positives and negatives to this website. We've reviewed the website here;

Positives:

- The website is informative with a video to keep people's attention
- The colour scheme is friendly and appealing
- The website has social marketing built in with Facebook and Twitter
- There is a range of brochures available
- The special offers at the bottom really capture your attention
- The website allows you to pay online for a wide range of solutions

Negatives:

- The site has a strange tab on the right hand side, what is this? Well, it turns out it's a special offers page.
- Who do I phone? The telephone number is for London and Sheffield - but I'm in Newcastle, Glasgow, Cornwall... The website needs a 0800 number!
- The imagery on the about us page (big random building) is out of place and cold / strange looking
- Does Sliding Wardrobe World only operate in London / Sheffield or around the UK?
- The logo on Sliding Wardrobe World doesn't take you back to the home page
- The Blog is a month out of date

Overall, Sliding Wardrobe World is a sleek, sexy and informative website with the latest technology built into the website. Perhaps an online system where a client can track their order would be beneficial. The website is well structured and relatively clear about the services and prices.

Do you have a good or bad experience of any Sliding Mirror Wardrobe / Fitted bedroom company?

Inflatable Furniture: The Way Of the Future

“Innovate or Die” is the well known expression – well, that’s exactly what Oskar Zieta, a polish furniture designer has done.  His innovative furniture is more than hot air.

Instead of flat pack furniture it’s inflatable steel furniture. The designer has managed to create chairs, stools and ladders, with the latest invention being a coat stand which requires little effort to erect.

The picture shows some or the inventors latest creations and we think they are excellent! Each piece of furniture uses air within the metal elements to construct the furniture.

The 36 year old designer is an architect by trade and has studied the process of stabilising sheet metal. To make his products he takes sheet metal which is cut extremely thin (1mm) and shaped accordingly. It’s then laser welded into place before being inflated with pressurised air. This then expands the metal into the appropriate shape.

The team are already looking into other metals and applications for the invention which could include bridges and an ultra-lightweight wind rotor. Further testing is taking place to see where other metals would work within the same process including copper and aluminium.

Zieta has said "My dream project is constructions in space, where FiDU's ultra-lightness and possibilities of volumetric expansion could be crucial," he says.

Hat’s off (and onto the inflatable metal coat stand) for Zieta and his invention which is sure to revolutionise the furniture industry.

Selecting Your Bedroom Furniture

The typical adult spends 7 hours a night in their bedroom. It should be a space where you feel comfortable and happy. However, we all know that our bedroom can become one of the messiest rooms in the house!

One way to ensure you are happy with your bedroom is to select furniture which is representative of your style and taste. The furniture can improve your mood but also store away all of that clutter.

Bedroom storage ideas can be freestanding wardrobes through to fully fitted bedroom wardrobes. Alternatively you may choose modern, minimal furniture to give you a feeling of wide open spaces - this can often lead to a lack of space to store clothing, shoes, handbags, suits, ties, extra bedding and every day personal essentials.

How to choose your bedroom furniture?

Stop. Think. Review. Buy - it's our simple moto when purchasing furniture.

Stop and think about who you are, what your bedroom should say about you and what you expect from your bedroom. If you get the right furniture will you still have to re-paint? Is the lighting a problem too? Make the furniture part of the overall review.

Once you know who you are and your individual style and requirements from the furniture then you can start to look at companies who provide your type of furniture. If your taste is unique it may be a difficult task however the internet has a wealth of knowledge when selecting your bedroom furniture.

When you've found your bedroom furniture at a price you are happy with then all that's left to do is to purchase it. If you're buying online remember to measure up before purchasing!

Take your time to select your bedroom furniture - it's too important to rush!

Affordable Housing - Shared Equity / Shared Ownership

Halifax has produced a survey which evalues affordable housing options in England since 2007. The information was gathered from Tenant Services and the local Government.

45,000 new homes have been built within the bracket of affordable housing schemes. In 2006/07, 5% of houses being built were part of the affordable housing schemes. In 2009/10 it's up 8% to 13%.

The affordable housing schemes include shared ownership and equity support options being provided by house builders and the local Government. This support has made owning a property possible for buyers unable to find the minimum deposits or who can't afford the repayments on the full mortgage.

The price of properties has declined in recent years as a result of the recession however the property prices are still too expensive for most first time buyers to afford. The support to create affordable housing supports local businesses and house builders alike, not to mention the first time buyers themselves.

Some shared equity schemes are paying as much as 40% of the property value upfront, leaving the house buyer to obtain a mortgage for the remaining 60%. The 40% loan within the shared equity scheme usually lasts for 10 years - by which time the property value should have increased and your mortgage will have been paid for 10 years.

Styles of Bedroom Furniture

What does your fitted bedroom say about you? There are numberous different styles of bedroom furniture available and each represents an unique taste. With a subjective topic such as fitted bedroom furniture, there isn't a right and wrong style - just what you like.

From these pictures, which do you prefer?

Average Age 35 for First Time Buyers

Research from the Post Office Mortgages has found that the average age of a first time buyer is 35. The home buyer research compared the difference for first time buyers in the 1960's where the average age was 23 years of age.

Over 53% of potential house buyers between the ages of 25-34 don't think they will ever be able to afford to buy a house. Half of the would be buyers aged 25-34 believe they will never be able to afford a deposit unless their circumstances change. This would include receiving a bonus from work or a lump sum from parents.

London house buyers face the toughest task of gathering a deposit due to the cost of the properties. Family members across the survey are being relied upon to support their offspring and meet the funding gap.

How to Use Lighting to Brighten a Room

Dark spaces in a home convey an unfriendly, unapproachable space which reflects a distant and unwelcoming area.  Lighting, whether natural or from an appliance, can revamp a dull room to a welcoming area in your house.

There are some tips we have to brighten up those dark spaces;

1. Use the sun where possible - open up your blinds / curtains and let the sunlight brighten your room. Be careful though it doesn't damage wood!

2. Too much furniture is one of the reasons a room can look dark and uninviting, especially if the clutter is stopping people accessing parts of your home. Clearing the clutter will allow you to improve your house space.

3. The wallpaper and paint you use makes a huge difference. Use light colours to improve your house.

1st Time Buyers

1st time buyers are in one of the most precarious positions when trying to purchase their first property. Banks and building societies are asking for high deposit to minimise their risk following the banking collapse.

One of the best options for 1st time buyers is the equity share option being provided by housing associations and house builders. The other party will usually take up to 40% equity share in your house which they would get back within 10 years or when you sell the house. In 10 years you should have repaid a percentage of your mortgage and will be better placed financially to remortgage to include the extra cost.

Benefits

- It can be an excellent first step on the housing market
- You can own your property instead of renting continuously
- Because your property is being backed by another party (i.e. house builders will pay a percentage up front) then the banks are more satisfied to lend and your mortgage would be lower.

Negatives

- The properties may be overpriced to start with (mainly because they are newly built). This can mean the home owner is left with a property which is expensive and difficult to sell in the future.

Bedroom Furniture: The Grand Design

Unless you're a chronic insomniac or a video game-obsessed teen, the piece of furniture you spend most of your time in is your bed. Granted, most of us are in some varying state of unconsciousness during a good portion of this time. But nonetheless our bed is where we can be found anywhere from five to ten hours of any given day (probably snoring, drooling, or both). For many of us, however, our bed and, in turn, our bedroom furniture, rank fairly low on our list of decorating priorities. Why is this? For most of us, the appearance of the rooms where we do our entertaining (dining room, living room) is more important than a room few others besides ourselves see. While this is understandable, it is also a bit regrettable.

If your bedroom decor warranted you spending more time in it with your eyes open, don't you think you probably would? Relaxing with a good book in the afternoon, watching a little TV before bed, or even doing a little internet surfing on your laptop, all of these leisurely activities are more enjoyable in a room that's aesthetically pleasing and more conducive to such activities. So how can you transform your bedroom from a drab and lifeless cell into a place of relaxation and tranquillity? It's actually fairly easy and won't cause you to dip into the kids' college fund (again).

Sitting up in bed always seems like a better idea than it actually is. Getting comfortable can be a near impossibility and a sure invitation for some lower back pain. The solution is the Sensay Platform Bed. This sleek, modern bed features two separate ergonomic back rests that are gently curved and adjustable up and down, to suit most individual's support needs. The Sensay lets you enjoy a book or watch some television from the comfort of your bed while providing the support and comfort your body needs.

The rest of the Sensay Bedroom Set complements the platform bed perfectly. Every piece features the same understated, contemporary look with sharp geometric lines and a simple, Asian-inspired aesthetic.

Extra Storage for the Bedroom

Everyone can use more storage and one of the best places to add storage to is the bedroom. What with all your clothes and personal items cluttering up the closet and bureau, the bedroom can sometimes seem like a messy catch all for all your household clutter. Here's some ways you can clean up the bedroom and get some extra storage space too boot!

Your Closet
One way to gain a ton of space is to install a closet organizer. It doesn't have to be a fancy expensive one (although feel free if you want one). You won't believe how much extra space you can get from when you use one of these systems.

The metal rails systems for closets are great. You can get acrylic shelves, chrome baskets and special slotted pieces for shoes and hats. The slotted systems are good as they provide ventilation which helps your clothes to breathe and are easy to maintain. These adjustable components come with a non-chip and non stick coating.

When choosing a closet organizer, make sure you pick a system that allows you to double up your rack space. This way you can hang shorter clothes like shirts and skirts on top of each other and literally double your closet space!

Hidden Storage In Your Bedroom
You might already have some storage space in your bedroom that you don't even realize you have! Do you have space under the bed? Are you using it to it's fullest? Clean out all the dust bunnies and throw away the socks and junk that has accumulated under there and use this for long term storage. You can put off season clothing, camping gear, toys or whatever under there when it is not in use. Store the items in Tupperware containers (you can buy the low ones on wheels for easy retrieval) or space bags to protect the items and create a neat storage space.

Another overlooked storage area is a room divider. If you have one sitting in the corner as a decorative item, you might want to look at the space behind it. This can be used to store items that you don't need to get at every day like craft supplies or maybe even cleaning supplies.

Storage Baskets
Storage baskets are a great place to store various objects and can also add decorative touches to your bedroom. You can use them for small stuff like keys, holding bills or correspondence, toiletries, towels, jewellery and just about anything else that will fit in the basket. You can buy large baskets for your laundry and smaller ones to use as catch alls.

When buying baskets to use as storage in the bedroom, make sure you pick ones that match your bedroom décor. There are many types of storage baskets available in the market in many different sizes and shapes and colours, and in different materials. Some are utility oriented, while some are meant as decorative items. You can choose from willow, woven ash, rope, wrought iron, woven sea grass, bamboo, woodchip and a variety of other types with all different kinds of embellishments so you should be able to find a basket that matches any bedroom décor.

Adding more storage to your bedroom can help you get better organized and even help you remove some of the clutter from other rooms in the house. Now you just need to remember to put that stuff away in the right place!

Tips to Improve Your Kitchen

Mostly everyone wants a new kitchen but few people realize the work and inconvenience that goes into a kitchen remodel. A big remodel can take months and you won't have access to the room while the work is going on. While this can be a trying time, once you have your beautiful new kitchen in place it will be well worth it!

Here's some tips to get you through the remodel and on to your new kitchen:

1. You will need to set up a temporary kitchen in another part of the house. Make sure it is a convenient location with have access to water and a space to keep food cold as well as a place to heat up meals. Sometimes portable appliances like a crock pot or electric frying pan and a small dorm fridge and microwave work good for a temporary arrangement if you will be replacing your old appliances.

2. Make sure you really think about how long the job will take. Most jobs run take longer than expected. This can be frustrating for everyone, so it's in your best interest to set a realistic date and that way you won't be disappointed.

3. Make sure you know what you are going to reuse. Whether you do some of the work yourself or hire it out make sure that it is very clear what things are going to be reused. The cabinets, counter tops and flooring can become damaged during a remodel and if you are planning on reusing them this can be a huge problem and expense. Remember to be careful around these reusable items.

4. Make sure you seal off the room properly so you don't get dust and debris all over the house. If you have hired someone to do the job, they will probably know just what to do but if you are doing it yourself, invest in some plastic sheeting and make sure you secure it around the doorways as good as possible.

5. Get everything out of the kitchen. Box up everything that will not be used in your temporary kitchen. Label the boxes and store them out of the way.

6. Remove anything that isn't nailed or screwed down. This includes drawers, lazy susans, spice racks, wall clocks, ornaments, etc. Place a protective cover over anything that must remain in place while you work.

7. Make arrangements for the removal of any refuse that may accumulate during the remodelling. if you must rent a dumpster, do so in plenty of time or have a pick up truck on hand for hauling the rubbish to the dump. if you plan to salvage the old cabinetry for a workshop or donation to a charitable cause, have a place ready for them to go as you take them out of your work area.

8. Think safety and remember to turn off all utilities b efore removing any major appliances, turn off all utilities. This can be done at the individual shut off valves for gas and water. If there are no shut off valves, you will have to turn off the main valve. The main gas valve is usually located near the gas meter. Remember that, once you turn off the gas to the whole house, ALL pilot lights will have to be relit before they will work again. Without careful planning you may find yourself without hot water when you're ready to clean up after a hard day's work.

9. In older homes, the wiring may have been modified over the years and it may not be clear which circuits or fuses control specific areas. If you are unsure, turn off the main power or get professional assistance. Never take a chance with electricity! In addition, tape over the breakers so they won't be turned on inadvertently. If you plan on upgrading your electrical system and adding new outlets and fixtures, it will be necessary to dismantle all existing outlets and fixtures.

10. Remove all light bulbs. Then, dismantle each fixture by using a screwdriver to unscrew the plate and the receptacle and pull the receptacle out of the box. Put wire nuts on any exposed wires for the interim. The bare copper wire is the ground and does not need to be capped.

Kitchen Improvement - things to consider

Here are 10 important guidelines for your kitchen design project.

1. For efficiency, the work triangle (the space between the sink, refrigerator, and stove) should measure 26' or less with no single side longer than 9', or less than 4'.

2. In kitchens smaller than 150 sq. ft., opt for at least 13' of base cabinets, 12' of wall cabinets, and 11' of countertop. In kitchens which are larger, go with at least 16' of base cabinets, 15 1/2' of wall cabinets, and 16 1/2' of countertop.

3. For convenience, plan work aisles to be at least 42" wide for one cook, and at least 48" wide in multi-cook kitchens.

4. Specify a minimum of 24" of counter space on one side of the sink and at least 18" on the other.

5. To create the most accessible landing for unloading groceries, allow at least 15" of counter space on the handle side of a standard refrigerator; on both sides if it's a side-by-side model. Or include a landing area directly across from the refrigerator, but no more than 48" away.

6. For cleanup ease, install the dishwasher within 36" of one edge of the sink and allow for at least 21" of standing room next to it.

7. For microwaves and ovens, provide at least 15 " of counter space nearby, at least 16" deep.

8. For optimum clearance, no entry, appliance, or cabinet doors should interfere with another.

9. For comfort and to help avoid repetitive-motion injury, plan for work counters of different heights; between 28 and 36" off the floor (easier for chopping and seated-use access), and between 36 and 46" for general tasks (higher counters accommodate taller cooks).

10. To install a cabinet unit above the cook top, make sure the clearance is at least 24" for a fireproof surface, 30" for an unprotected surface.

Designing a kitchen is as much a science as it is an art. Knowing the recommended measurements to use when planning the project can make all the difference in the final outcome.

Furniture industry struggles

The owner of a city furniture store which closes next month says he is sorry to leave Coventry so soon – and partly blames the council for not doing enough to encourage smaller traders.

Paul Slack, who runs Livingwoods of Coventry in Corporation Street, is taking early retirement because he could not afford to renew the lease on the shop.

Mr Slack, 61, said: “Due to the economic climate I can’t renew my lease. The last couple of years we haven’t made any money, but had the situation been better, I would have liked to trade a few more years.

“I feel desperately sorry and devastated I have had close sooner than I wanted to.

“If I could have opened for another few years I would have done but the overheads are just too high.”
The closure will leave just a single hairdresser’s operating in the row of shops – which was once home to the popular Alma’s deli and coffee shop and other small stores.

Mr Slack, from Kettering, opened the oak furniture store in Coventry with wife Jane 15 years ago.
He said he chose Coventry because he felt it offered lots of opportunities, but blamed high council rates and rent for their decision to close early. He will shut up for good on September 28.

He added: “I first came to Coventry because I thought it was a good city, with a good demographic population and people wanting quality furniture. It definitely lived up to my expectations but the city has changed.

New Building Projects Show Worrying Signs

The building industry has been one of the worst affected from the recession and most construction that is currently taking place is for houses which have already been bought or have a mortgage ready for them prior to them been started.

New construction in East Riding of 260 new homes of which Goole will have 101, however concerns have been raised because only 7 of them in  in will be classified as "affordable".

In 2007 Planning guidelines stated that 15 homes or more had to contain 40% of affordable house however these new houses would mean that these targets would not be met. It is because of a loophole that Goole is able to build these properties without violating the guidelines. The plans were initially accepted before the guidelines were created in 2007.

The East Riding council have announced their plans to build 330 homes with further funding to build another 150 more in the future.

21% of Brits to Improve their house

A new survey has found that people are taking out more money to improve their house before moving. This may mean painting, fixing doors, fitted bedroom furniture or new carpets.

The survey conducted by Sainsbury's Finance reviewed its customers and uncovered that 21 per cent of people taking out personal loans were for home improvement.

This is a similar figure to 2010 when it was 20.8 per cent and the total amount of borrowing for this reason reached almost £3.2 billion. It's anticipated that 2011 will follow the same trend.

It's expected people will want to maximise their assets value before they decide to try and sell it. In a recessiom, when house prices have fallen dramatically it's essential people get as much money for their property. Taking out a loan can be one way to improve their house to then sell it on and make a profit.

Moben and Dolphin Go Into Administration

The bathroom and bedroom companies Moben and Dolphin both went into administration last month as their parent company Homeform collapsed. Their sister company, Sharps was sold off and it is believed that Homebase may be interested in buying up some of the previous companies which have closed.

Homeform blamed the decision to call in administrators on a slow down in business because of cash strapped customers. Kitchen Direct which was also owned by Homeform was closed down and is being sold off.

We may one day see Moben and Dolphin back on the high street but they may look completely different. The quality we once got may be better or it may be worse, the price could be far higher than we are used to or maybe it will be cheaper. We look back with fond memories of these brands as they were, and realise that they are another victim of the recession which died long before their time.

Tips When Moving House

It's the most stressful event of your life - moving house! So, how can it be made easier? Where can the stress be eased and how can it become enjoyable. Like many things in life it's down to preparation and good luck.

Your dream move doesn't have to be stressful, awkward and have you fretting. Our simple tips below will help to erradicate those pre-moving nerves.

Home improvement specialists at Improve-Your-House believe "It's expected people will be worrying about moving house and glad when it's all complete. When other people are buying your house a percentage of house buying is down to luck and the other party being organised, the rest you can do yourself."

The choice is yours

Make sure you chose an estate agent you are happy with. There are lots available and they will charge different levels of fees. Remember, once you sign the agreement you will have to pay them money for their efforts so think it through long and hard.

Spring clean, even in Winter

Spring clean your house. A clean and tidy house will be easier to sell to prospective buyers. This means it will take time and effort but it'll be worth it in the end.

Keep the buyer in mind

Every house will appeal to different people. If you have a 4 bedroom house then it's likely a family will want to buy your property.

Don't put peple off

Give your time to the process. People don't want to wait to see a property - be flexible!

Don't be afraid to ask questions

They say that knowledge is power so make sure you ask the right questions. What are the neighbours like? How much is the council tax?

"If you want to get ahead, think ahead"

Ask yourself, what do I need to do in order to get people interested? Could fixing that broken door seal the deal and would the £50 it would cost be worth it?

Get your finances in order

The main reason for property's falling through is an inability to secure the funding. Be prepared for this and be ready before placing an offer on a house.

How to put in an offer

You need to balances your finances to meet the needs of the seller without over committing yourself financially. Do the sums over and over again and then bid depending on how much you want the property.

The costs add up

The expenses when moving sure add up. If you are moving house try and set aside extra money in case something goes wrong.

The move itself

"Fail to plan and plan to fail".

The more prepared you are the better chance you will have to avoid failure.

The dreaded packing

It may sound crazy but don't leave packing to the last couple of days. Get it started early and have a system so you know where everything is! Remember, it's a fresh start - so don't bring junk with you... clean as you go.

Who do you need to tell?

Make sure the DVLA, bank, royal mail etc know you've moved. Tell them in advance!

That's what friends are for

Can your friends and family help? I'm sure you've helped enough over the years?

Change Your Bedroom

There are two rooms in every home that are the most private, your bedroom and your bathroom. It's not something you are told to really look for, but the current state of your bedroom might be raising your stress levels when you're in it. It might be messy, dirty on a microscopic level, unorganized, or just flat out boring and all of this can raise your stress.

Alter the way you look at it for just a bit. Your bedroom should be an oasis of relaxation, not a place of business. Think of how your sleep and relationship would improve if you walked into your bedroom and felt perfectly at peace and ultimately relaxed, it would do wonders for you for sure.

Here are some of the important things you should now consider when redecorating your bedroom.
First, think lighting and atmosphere. During the evening and night hours, you want soft light, but not much more at all because that wakes your brain up too much. During the day, you can have lots of daylight, but make sure at night, it gets dark.

You can accomplish this by using smaller watt lightbulbs. It's becoming popular to use different colored lighting to create different atmospheres in the room.

Second, try to think what your ultimate place of relaxation would sound like. The different soundscapes that you can get with technology like the ipad are amazing realistic these days. These noises help to put your mind in a state of relaxing and rest while also acting like white noise and blocking out typically neighborhoods sounds like dogs barking.

There are amazing sounds like ocean waves, rain and thunderstorms, bells, wind in the trees and so much more. Some noise machines even help your brain fall sleep.

Third, think fragrances. Two smells have been studied by scientists and proven to help, lavender and jasmine. Lavender has been shown to help men and women the most, but jasmine did pretty well too.

You can use oils or tee lights with smelling trays to help get your room full of the smell. Get a tiny fan to help push the scent around and keep it moving all night. The studies have proven that both these smells work so well because they increase the length of deep sleep you experience which is really important.

Lastly, you want to keep allergies out of your room at all costs. The right bedding and flooring are the things that will help you accomplish this. For bedding, there are a few naturally organic bedding that repel dust mites and molds. Silk sheets are you best bet and very luxurious as well.

If you can't afford the high cost of silk, bamboo sheets are a great option. Also remember to consider your comforter and your mattress as well. Both of those are known to house lots of allergens.

Your flooring can actually be a hot spot for allergens as well. If you have old rugs or carpets, try to get them replace. If you can, keep your floors wood or tile as they last a really long time and they are easy to keep clean.

Bedroom Furniture: Platform Beds

Platform beds are a great option for those who want to maximize their bedroom space. These beds are one of the most popular bedroom furniture that comes in a variety of styles and sizes to meet everyone's home needs. If you wish to get one for your bedroom, then the Queen Wood Platform Bed is smart choice!

If you think your bedroom is not as organized as the ones you see in magazines, then try changing your bedroom furniture. To make your bedroom appear twice as spacious, modern beds are a great choice. The slots and drawers in these beds help you store your mattress, extra pillows, and other bedroom accessories.

Modern beds not only add a touch of modernity to your master bedroom, but also offer a clutter free look. Most of the platform beds come with classy and impressive bed frames, headboards, and a striking design that you'll want to make it a part of your bedroom right away.

Feng Shui Bedroom

When considering feng shui principles in the bedroom, remember that the bedroom is a key area that we focus on when applying Feng Shui to a house. The bedroom is important as it is the place where you rest and recuperate. As such we need the feng shui of the bedroom to be calm, peaceful, restful, and supportive to one's health.

Feng Shui Bedroom for Health and Well-Being

The health aspect is key. When analyzing a house, the priority for the remedies in the bedroom should be the health. In xuan kong terms (flying stars) this means that the people or mountain star should be supportive for the health of the person. If it is not, then the correct elemental remedy should be applied. For example, if the mountain star of 2 is present in the bedroom, then we need metal to reduce the ill effects of that star.

If you do not know about the flying stars, then you should focus on the environmental aspects of feng shui for the bedroom. Here is one point from a discussion that was very interesting. Master Larry Sang of the American Feng Shui Institute suggested that you should not have circular and rectangular furniture mixed in a bedroom as it can create discord. In fact, circular shapes promote activity and square and rectangular shapes promote stability and rest. So it is best not to have circular beds and to use more square or rectangular shapes in your areas that you are trying to achieve a peaceful and restful environment in your bedroom.

The bedroom should be a place for rest and recovery. It should be designed with peace in mind. Do not have a lot of clutter and haphazardly collected furniture, books, electronics, etc. Make it a sanctuary away from the rest of the crazy world. Use soft designs and avoid using sharp colors or patterns. Of course the great debate is whether a television should occupy the room. If it is a sha (negative influence) to getting rest, then it shouldn't be there. Additionally, the screen should not be directly across from you as it acts as a reflective object that can create another form of sha. If you wake up and see your own movement in the screen, you might think it is someone else and get startled. As such, you should not have the TV directly across from you.

Feng Shui Bedroom Tips

  • Keep the bedroom clean and fresh (open the windows if need be)
  • Avoid placing the bed to a corner. Always use a flat wall behind the headboard
  • Do not place your bed under an exposed beam if at all possible. You should have a comfortable sleeping position
  • Avoid having a mirror at the foot of the bed facing the bed

Keep in mind that the bedroom should be calming and peaceful, thus you should not have a lot of work going on in the bedroom and do not keep an office in the bedroom. Avoid clutter. Keep the room peaceful and neat. Work towards supporting your own rest. Remember that the bedroom is your place for rest and recovery. Treat your bedroom with respect and thus you are respecting yourself.
