When considering feng shui principles in the bedroom, remember that the bedroom is a key area that we focus on when applying Feng Shui to a house. The bedroom is important as it is the place where you rest and recuperate. As such we need the feng shui of the bedroom to be calm, peaceful, restful, and supportive to one's health.

Feng Shui Bedroom for Health and Well-Being


The health aspect is key. When analyzing a house, the priority for the remedies in the bedroom should be the health. In xuan kong terms (flying stars) this means that the people or mountain star should be supportive for the health of the person. If it is not, then the correct elemental remedy should be applied. For example, if the mountain star of 2 is present in the bedroom, then we need metal to reduce the ill effects of that star.

If you do not know about the flying stars, then you should focus on the environmental aspects of feng shui for the bedroom. Here is one point from a discussion that was very interesting. Master Larry Sang of the American Feng Shui Institute suggested that you should not have circular and rectangular furniture mixed in a bedroom as it can create discord. In fact, circular shapes promote activity and square and rectangular shapes promote stability and rest. So it is best not to have circular beds and to use more square or rectangular shapes in your areas that you are trying to achieve a peaceful and restful environment in your bedroom.

The bedroom should be a place for rest and recovery. It should be designed with peace in mind. Do not have a lot of clutter and haphazardly collected furniture, books, electronics, etc. Make it a sanctuary away from the rest of the crazy world. Use soft designs and avoid using sharp colors or patterns. Of course the great debate is whether a television should occupy the room. If it is a sha (negative influence) to getting rest, then it shouldn't be there. Additionally, the screen should not be directly across from you as it acts as a reflective object that can create another form of sha. If you wake up and see your own movement in the screen, you might think it is someone else and get startled. As such, you should not have the TV directly across from you.

Feng Shui Bedroom Tips

• Keep the bedroom clean and fresh (open the windows if need be)
• Avoid placing the bed to a corner. Always use a flat wall behind the headboard
• Do not place your bed under an exposed beam if at all possible. You should have a comfortable sleeping position
• Avoid having a mirror at the foot of the bed facing the bed

Keep in mind that the bedroom should be calming and peaceful, thus you should not have a lot of work going on in the bedroom and do not keep an office in the bedroom. Avoid clutter. Keep the room peaceful and neat. Work towards supporting your own rest. Remember that the bedroom is your place for rest and recovery. Treat your bedroom with respect and thus you are respecting yourself.

Bedrooms for young men

A little boy's room isn't necessarily going to work for a tween, teen or young man who increasingly distances himself from the world of toys as he enters a world of music, pop culture and girls.

The cute little pirate ship bed or cowboy bedspread may no longer cut it, as your young man seeks a room that is a little cooler and hipper, something that he wouldn't mind letting his friends see.

When thinking about young men's bedroom furniture and décor, you need to resist the temptation to know what's best. Young adults spend a lot of time in their room, and it really should reflect their personality and needs, not yours. Remember, paint is cheap and so is spackle. After your son heads off to college you can always redecorate the room the way you want for very little money.

In the meantime, your son can have the room of his dreams. If you're thinking about transforming your young man's bedroom, start by talking to him about his interests, likes and dislikes.

A theme for the room is always a good idea. For instance, if your son is really into music, you can turn the room into a pseudo recording studio, complete with posters of his favorite bands. A lot of kids are into gaming and your hard core gamer could fall in love with a room that celebrates his passion for Call of Duty or World of Warcraft.

When renovating the room, start off by selecting a color for the walls. Take your son with you to shop for paint and get him involved in the color choice. You can always exercise ultimate veto power. If your son suggests black, you may be able to guide him instead to doing a section of wall that is covered with "blackboard paint," a special paint where he can express his creativity with chalk. For other new products and for painting ideas in general, talk to the paint specialist at your local store.

When coming up with a color scheme for the room, ask your son about his favorite color. Use it as the basis of a palette of colors, so everything matches. A lot of parents will try to wing it, ending up with colors that are either blah or a little too feminine.

Before you get to the painting stage, get some buy-in from your teen. Tell them that you'll be happy to purchase the materials, but they have to do a lot of the work. This will not only lighten the load, but give you some family time, working together to transform the room and really make it his.

Of course, the old furnishings may have to go. If you can't refinish them or if they are too childlike, it's time to go on a shopping trip. The best approach is to go with a flexible furnishing approach. For example, you may opt for a futon instead of a traditional bed so your son can have a space to chill out with friends after school. If space is at a premium, you may want to go with a loft bed instead. The setup can have a second bed below or even a desk for your son's computer.

The goal with young men's bedroom furniture at this stage is to purchase something that can serve another purpose later. For example, if your son will be going off to college some day, you may want to get quality furniture that can later become part of his first apartment.

If you're planning to turn the room into a part time guestroom instead, you may want to go with a more conservative look to the furniture, adding color and style with items that can be later removed, such as art, wall color, bedding, etc.

One indispensible part of any room for a young man is a comfortable desk. Kids these days have a lot of homework on their plate and you want to create a space that allows them to do the work while staying organized. Comfort is an important part of the workspace, too. Invest in a desk chair that is comfortable. The desk should have enough room for a computer and papers as well as a workspace. The size of the desk will depend on the type of computer your son has, so factor that in.

If you already have a great mattress, you can always use it on the new bed. There's no reason why you'd want to replace a relatively new mattress. Instead, shop for a new bed that uses the same size mattress you have now. It will save you a couple bucks.

Finally, lighting is important. Young men like different moods of lighting. They may want low lights for chilling with friends and listening to music and bright light when doing homework. You can create different spaces in the room with different lighting strategies. For example, you may want to add a lamp to the desk for homework while adding a dimmer to the light on the ceiling. A floor lamp will do nicely over a chair for reading or playing video games.

Word of mouth- How important is it to you?

Over the next few months we will start to release some information which we have gathered from a sample of our existing customers. Our sample is based on 100 customers.

So, we first asked our sample about the process of finding a suitable fitted bedroom company. The result was interesting. Word of mouth proved to be a vital ingredient in choosing a fitted bedroom company. 60% of people asked at least one friend or family about their experience of bedroom furniture companies. The result meant that 39% of the people who sought advice ended up changed their mind about the company they would use for their bedroom furniture.
82% of the group said they knew of a brand company who advertised on TV. 63% of this group said that after getting a quote from the brand known company they were not impressed and looked elsewhere. The top locations for finding a fitted bedroom company were newspaper adverts, online Google searches and solely asking a friend. 18% of the sample made their decision solely based on what their friend or family member said.

Robert from Glasgow said, " I would never spent thousands of pounds on bedroom furniture without speaking to friends and family first. It makes good sense to ask around for recommendations. I was about to use a different bedroom company but my cousin told me about the other companies terrible customer service and constant problems with the wardrobe - so I went elsewhere. "

Sale, Sale, Sale… it must be a bargain!

Christmas has passed, New Year has begun and the TV adverts promoting the greatest sales of all time are everywhere to see.

However, behind these corporate communications masquerading as a wonderful bargain there is sceptical question I have: it all seems too good to be true.

You can’t help but ask, if you can take 75% off in a sale is the company making a loss? No, of course not. So, does this just highlight the mark up on products and how much we are actually being overcharged? For example, Sharps bedrooms now have their sale on which means a customer can get a loads of cash off their bedroom. But I ask you, is Sharps still making a profit – how can that be? Perhaps they are making poorer / cheaper quality furniture or are there prices huge to start with? One thing’s for sure, the marketing costs in promoting Sharps would be astronomical and who is that passed onto, that’s right, the customer. In the end, a sale is only as good as what else is in the market place. For instance, 50% off a holiday to Tenerife costing £1,000 is great, but if the company next door is doing it for £500 and throwing in first class tickets and that’s his usual price I know who I’ll be booking through.

Sales are a technique best used by the largest brands to make you feel like you get real value, not just bedroom companies. I’m not one to stop the upward trend in the consumer purchase market and there are genuine sales out there. However the route to improve long term customer satisfaction is through providing honest value for the customer. Instead, we religiously see the same TV adverts, at the same time of the year, promoting the same products.

Consumers are not stupid. They see through the sales. They want a bargain but understand value. Companies have to match this and meet customer’s demands.

Research & Development

Research and development is important for most companies to ensure their products are fresh, innovative and ahead of their competitors. This essentially means the end customer gets a good deal and they feel they are actually getting value for money.

The same Research and Development should be created in the fitted bedroom and sliding mirror wardrobe industry. However, this doesn't seem to be happening.

The only real change in 20 years seems to be to the designs being created by other companies (which are eventually copied by everyone else if they are good enough). We have also seen a trend move away from wooden overhead wardrobes in bedrooms towards mirror sliding wardrobes.

We now have mobile phones which can access the internet, TV boxes which can record shows via a computer and the internet, we can communicate with people on the other side of the world and just this week we found 7 new planets in our solar system. Yet, bedroom furniture hasn’t really made a huge improvement.

What do we do?
We communicate with our customers constantly to hear their thoughts, opinions and continually strive to Improve our service. Our customers told us they want to design their own bedroom, soft closing wardrobes, smoother running mechanisms, lighter wardrobes, friendly and local staff and much more. This is what we have done to make our products better than out competitors and ensure customers get true value.

Why can’t we press and button and watch the wardrobe open for us? We could then see our clothes rack open, allowing us to choose our garment? People are all different heights so instead of having to stretch to reach something, couldn’t a machine operated system bring it to us? Would this system enable us to utilise more space within the wardrobe too?

The argument would be that this is making us lazy and we don’t need it. But some people could really benefit from this system and others would just be making their life easier.

Why do we suggest this openly and give away our tips for competitors to copy? Well, we want to really see innovation in bedrooms, not just in design, but in functionality.
